Description:

Native American, Midwest United States, Hopewell culture, Middle Woodland period, ca. 100 BCE to 500 CE. A wonderful cache of 9 hand-knapped flint tools, each of an impressively large scale and an ovate lanceolate form with sharp edges. They all present seemingly random flaking patterns with thick midsections and rounded bases that taper - either gradually or dramatically - to a point. Implements like these could be used as handheld tools for a variety of ritualistic or utilitarian tasks such as scraping, cutting, digging, or they could be hafted onto handles for greater leverage. Size of largest (second from the left in lower row): 3.9" L x 2.9" W (9.9 cm x 7.4 cm); of frame: 16" W x 12" H (40.6 cm x 30.5 cm)
