Description:

Native American, Pacific Coast, United States, California, Channel Islands, Chumash, Nicolenos, or Tongva people, ca. 1250 to 1800 CE. This is an interesting collection of seal, whale, and deer bone tools and an abalone shell used by the indigenous peoples from the Channel Islands. The bone points were used as knife blades, awls, or harpoon heads, each pecked and sharpened to a pointed tip. The shortest piece has the remains of a fin or barb which may have assisted in hunting or fishing. Abalone shells were discarded in great piles after eating the mollusk, but some pieces were utilized as tools, the full shell is perfect as shallow dish or scoop and is deliberately pierced through the center. Size (shell): 4.25" Diameter x 1.125" W (10.8 cm x 2.9 cm); (longest bone): 5.25" L x 0.5" W (13.3 cm x 1.3 cm)
