Description:

Native American, Cherokee Nation, eastern US, ca. 19th century. Carved stone pipe of gray-black soapstone, stem with angular walls, bowl ovoid. On the front exterior of the bowl is a bear carved in high relief wrapped around the curved walls as if it were a tree with the bear's claws digging deeply into the bark. Both the inner walls of the bowl as well as the stem openings have been bow drilled. Exterior appears to have tool marks, but if 19th century that would certainly have been available to the maker. Size: 4" L x 3" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
