Description:

Native American, United States, Columbia River Plateau region, likely Nez Perce & Montana, Flathead Reservation, Salish & Kootenai Tribes, ca. mid-20th century CE. A pair of leather garments with beadwork, a man's vest and gauntlets. The fringed vest is purportedly from the Flathead reservation, made from brain-tanned deer or elk leather, with beaded breast pockets and buttons carved from antler. The smoke-tanned leather gauntlets are beaded with floral patterns, likely Nez Perce handiwork. The United States Cavalry riders wore gauntlet gloves as part of their uniform, introducing the clothing style to Native tribes who turned the gloves into spectacular works of art with painstaking beadwork. Gauntlets were adopted into their regalia and fancy wear for powwows. Size: 21" L x 20" W (53.3 cm x 50.8 cm)
