Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Highland Narino region, Tuza cultural complex, Narino culture, ca. 1250 to 1500 CE. An attractive pair of pottery vessels, exteriors adorned with horizontal bands of black, negative resist decoration atop a red ground. Negative resist techniques were used to create the geometric shapes: a resin was applied then the burnished surface was covered in a contrasting slip, the patterns revealed after the resin was removed. The motifs were probably inspired by the natural world and woven textiles. Personal belongings and other valuables, such as pottery, were often buried with the deceased as grave goods, and bones were often deposited in large pottery urns. Size of jar : 4.75" Diameter x 4.5" H (12.1 cm x 11.4 cm)
