Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino region, Capuli or Quillacinga culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A superb figural pottery vessel of a seated figure, with piercings for suspension within the arms and a round opening at the top of the head. The surface is covered with linear and geometric patterning in black, formed by the negative-resist technique, using a wax or resin to apply pigment. The cultures of the Narino region developed a belief system centered around the afterlife. Depending on the deceased's status, burial pits could be very deep, and some have side chambers that contained an array of grave goods, such as pottery vessels similar to this example, gold objects, and beads. The depths of these graves ranged from 3 to 26 feet deep (1-8 meters)! Size: 6" L x 5.5" W x 6.75" H (15.2 cm x 14 cm x 17.1 cm)
