South Asia, India, Naga peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A necklace comprised of a cotton cord, shell beads, and a brass face pendant, the 3 heads symbolize decapitated trophies. Although headhunting was banned under British colonial rule, headhunting practices continued into the mid-20th century and adornments often celebrated this important cultural ritual. The Naga people are known for their artistry, particularly when it comes to jewelry and brassworking. During special rituals, men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments; the shell beads were made from sacred conchs and these shell strands were often passed down as heirlooms. Size of strand doubled: 20" L (50.8 cm) pendant: 5.5" L x 2.75" W (14 cm x 7 cm)
