Description:

Greece, Late Mycenaean to Archaic, ca. 1200 to 600 BCE. A beautiful, wheel-made, polychrome amphora in the Mycenaean pictorial style with an elegant body and equidistantly placed twin handles bridging neck to shoulder, a diminutive yet defined foot, and a soft, rolled rim. The exterior walls are decorated with russet and black bands, the handle with thick black striations, and the shoulders with two wonderful scenes of prancing bulls in profile with dotted bellies flanked by birds in flight, perhaps cattle egrets. Size: 6.375" W x 6.626" H (16.2 cm x 16.8 cm)

A vase also decorated with bulls and birds in the Mycenaean Pictorial Style resides in the collection of the British Museum (1897.0401.1150).

Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago. Thermoluminescence test confirms that the piece is 2500 years old +/- 30%, this high degree of variance because of its mineral composition. A document certifying the thermoluminescence test will be provided with the item.
