Description:

Ancient Greece, Mycenaean, ca. 1500 BCE. A lovely wheel-thrown pottery jar of a classic Mycenaean form with a circular ring foot, a compressed spherical body, a pair of arching handles that meet at a third central handle, and a funnel-form spout on the front. The vessel is painted with encircling bands of black and red pigment atop a beige ground, with additional rings beneath the foot and atop the central handle, and a ladder-form motif along the handles. Perhaps used to transport oil, this is a fine example from when Mycenae was at its peak of influence and traded throughout the Mediterranean. Size: 4.25" W x 4.4" H (10.8 cm x 11.2 cm).
