Description:

Roman, found in Israel, Golan Heights, ca. 2nd century CE. A Roman bronze oil lamp sweetly adorned with a petite bird perched atop the bifurcated handle in the form of a magnificent rolling wave. The projecting piece within the lamp was created so that a pole could be inserted to the open notch on the underside. In effect, this lamp would have sat upon an upraised pole - a brilliant design for special light effects in the ancient world. Size: 5" L x 2.5" W x 2.625" H (12.7 cm x 6.4 cm x 6.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, Colorado, acquired in the 1950's, Displayed, Denver Art Museum (1960's)
