From the ancient Near East, Byzantine Empire, Samaria, Holyland, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. This is a pair of pottery mold-made lamps with the clear Byzantine style of using more abstract, geometric decorations than the Romans had in previous centuries. The handles are relatively flat and decorated with crosses. Both lamps have an elongated shape. Lamps in this style are sometimes known as "slipper lamps" because of their shape. Size of largest: 4.5" L x 2.45" W x 2.25" H (11.4 cm x 6.2 cm x 5.7 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, CO, acquired in the 1950's. Displayed, Denver Art Museum, 1960's.
