Description:

Central Asia, India, Gupta period, ca. 240 to 550 CE. Oh so rare, and oh so fabulous, this pottery tile depicts a warrior prepared for battle, wielding a sword in his left hand and a shield in his right. Note that the artist presented him in composite profile, so while the lower half of is body is in profile sitting upon the horse, his torso and head are facing front. In this way, he can provide us with the most definition and detail of the figure. After all, if he was in full profile, we most likely not see that shield, his elaborate uniform, and the features of his face. The artist also did a wonderful job conveying the horse's energy and motion. Just look at the horse's determined expression -- the open mouth and wide open eyes as he lifts his forelegs to gallop across the battlefield! The warrior on horseback is carved in relief, set with in a frame integral to the tile. Size: 5" W x 5.25" H (12.7 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, Colorado, acquired in the 1950's, Displayed, Denver Art Museum (1960's)
