Description:

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 1292 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery pitcher of intriguing form that is modeled heavily after Cypriot pottery wares of the time. The piriform vessel features a carinated lower body adorned with hand-painted black stripes, and a stocky handle arches off the verso. Trade routes during the New Kingdom extended across the Mediterranean Sea to include areas like Cyprus, Mycenae, and Knossos, so merchants and artisans were able to absorb many new and exotic styles. Vessels like this pitcher exemplify the creativity of ancient Egyptian craftspeople and how they could synthesize different artisanal techniques with their own. Size: 3.7" L x 3.6" W x 4.9" H (9.4 cm x 9.1 cm x 12.4 cm)
