Description:

North America, Native American, ca. early 20th century CE. Many strands of tiny glass seed beads, highly prized for their brilliant colors. Included here are strands of: red and white beads, translucent colorless beads, beads of periwinkle blue, sky blue, corn yellow, black and white, beige and brown, as well as one of orange and black with a zoomorphic pendant (perhaps a lizard or a snake) of blue, yellow, and black details on an orange ground. A fabulous ensemble! Size: longer strands measure ~ 33" L (83.8 cm)

Beads were among the earliest goods that Europeans traded with Native Americans. By the mid-16th century, Spaniards were trading beads into New Mexico. In time all beads came from trading posts; however, Indians spread trade beads extensively through their networks until they could be found in the most remote parts of the United States. Used to decorate various articles - moccasins, arm bands, belts, bandoliers, headbands, belts, jewelry, etc. beadwork came to symbolize the Native Americans' rich heritage.
