Description:

Ancient Western Europe, northern France, Le Grand-Pressigny, Homo Neanderthalensis, Mousterian, ca. 120,000 to 40,000 BCE. A beautiful knapped-stone hand axe of mottled citrine hues with beige and white inclusions. The petaloid tool is defined by lightly convex faces, a rounded butt end, a tapered tip, and sharpened edges, all formed in the classic Mousterian tradition. Unlike their much larger predecessors of the Sahara during the Acheulian period, Mousterian hand axes are smaller in comparison. Considered some of the rarest and most-prized tools of the Neanderthals, this is a fabulous example of ancient stone-working! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 3.3" W x 4.2" H (8.4 cm x 10.7 cm); 5.625" H (14.3 cm) on included custom stand.
