Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Devonian period, ca. 419.2 to 358.9 million years ago. A fossilized trilobite in the Hollardops genus, slightly raised above the rest of the surrounding stone matrix. There is great preservation to the eye facets - the bumpy texture certainly gives an insect like appearance to this arthropod! Trilobites are a type of prehistoric and extinct marine arthropod, first appearing in the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period (521 million years ago). The exact timing of their extinction varied among different species, but as a group, trilobites disappeared during the Permian-Triassic extinction event, one of the largest mass extinctions in Earth's history. Size of trilobite: 2.3" L x 1.75" W (5.8 cm x 4.4 cm); stone matrix: 4" L x 3.5" W (10.2 cm x 8.9 cm)
