Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Acheulean tradition, ca. 1.6 million to 200,000 years ago. A hand-knapped chert stone cutting tool with an ovoid shape and lovely warm beige and pink hues. A sharp cutting edge surrounds the periphery of the convex body. The process of knapping involves hitting a harder stone against the chert to flake the surface to the desired shape and sharpness. While a simple process, knapping took patience, for one stroke could take off too much or shatter the chert. The Acheulean stone tool tradition, named after the location in France where tools of this kind were first identified in 1847, represented a technological revolution. This blade was likely manufactured by homo erectus, a close ancestor of modern humans, and was made to be used in a variety of tasks, such as cutting, digging, and scraping hides. Lucite stand for photography purposes only. Size: 5.5" L x 3" W (14 cm x 7.6 cm)
