Description:

Philippines, Moro people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. A single-edged, Damascus steel blade with a tapered profile, narrowest near the hilt and gently widening until its truncated point. Referred to as a "kampilan," the blade's end also features seventeen circular holes with an additional five holes meant to be punched out but are still intact. A secondary blade point diverges from the primary near the end in an almost bill-hook fashion, with two tooth-like protruding metal tabs meant to tear and rip at flesh rather than slice and cut. The wooden hilt, attached above the handle, features wave-like carvings and has a bent iron support bar inserted through. The handle is elaborately carved with an animal head having open jaws and a coiled detail; grip is wrapped with a serpentine extension. Size: 39.5" L x 6" W (100.3 cm x 15.2 cm)
