Lot 162
Pre-Columbian, Post Classic Maya, Mixtec, modern day Mexico, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A tremendous pottery vessel, bell-shaped, with small symmetrical handles, unpainted, and a deep red painted background. A black ring, then a lower, lighter red painted base form the very bottom. Around the exterior, incised iconographic designs and black paint complete the decoration of the vessel. Sometimes Mixtec pottery designs are termed "codex-style" because of their similarity to the iconography of the prehispanic manuscripts. However, the meaning behind the symbols on this vessel is not known, and they are quite abstract - calling to mind, perhaps, the feathers of wild turkeys, reptilian eyes, cloud motifs
