Atlantic Watershed region, Late Period V, Ca. 700 to 1000 CE. Carved stone depicted as a rather large monolithic form, a somber standing male captive of noble rank with his hands and feet bound, his arms bent out at the elbows. Expertly carved from porous volcanic stone. 32"H (81.3 cm), custom mounted. Museum quality. This figure is important because of the rare iconography; it tells of a time when resources in this part of the world were scarce and in fierce competition amongst the highly populated cities in central America, leading to warfare, conquest, beheadings and the taking of noble prisoners.Doris Stone, in 'Pre Columbian Man in Costa Rica', states: "Sculptures represent the carrying of trophy heads, the offering of prayer or supplication, the chewing of coca; prisoners destined as slaves and as sacrifice victims (Fernandez Guardia 1908, p 50) (fig 164), and familiar deities are depicted in Lower Central America.Provenance: Ex-Wallace Katz collection; The Manhattan Galleries, Important Masterpieces of Pre-Columbian Art, May 14, 1983, lot 106. Purportedly exhibited at Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York, prior to 1983. The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.
