Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV to V, ca. 600 to 800 CE. An interesting mold-formed bichrome pottery vessel with a round but stable base, a bulbous body, an arching stirrup-shaped handle, a tapering conical spout, and a human body emerging from it. The figure holds a drum in both hands before the chest and wears a large, shell-shaped headdress with a face at its center. The face looks up at the viewer with an expression that looks plaintive or imploring, as if reaching out through the centuries to ask us what song we'd like to hear. Music was central to Moche ceremonial and court life. Size: 5.25" W x 8.8" H (13.3 cm x 22.4 cm)

Provenance: estate of Richard Newman, New Jersey, USA; ex-Sotheby's, New York (May 20, 1986, lot 190)
