Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Loma Negra, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. A fine scale consisting of a balance beam and a pair of hemispherical dishes. The hand-carved wooden balance beam is rectangular in form with four drilled suspension holes and two highly-stylized jaguars on the ends, and the entire bar is almost perfectly balanced. Accompanying the bar are a pair of gilded copper dishes, each with four evenly-spaced perforations around the thin rims. Size of largest (balance beam): 8.75" L (22.2 cm); 12" H (30.5 cm) on included custom stand.
