Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, Mochica (Moche) culture, ca. 500 to 700 CE. Not as well known as their Inca counterparts that came almost 1000 years later, the Moche are perhaps my favorite of the ancient South American cultures and were both fierce and fun-loving. They conveyed horrible human atrocities and yet very softer human emotions of love, tenderness, and humor. This fabulous textile belt was woven of camelid fibers in muted shades of brown and tan with added blue-green accents. It is woven in both an open-work technique along with alternating solid woven sections. Depicted are two almost Medusa-like creatures with long serpentine hair, each with piercing trancelike eyes, hands and arms held to their sides. Textiles from the north coast are far less common than those from the south due the climate being more moist making the survival rate of these textiles far lower. Textile section not including backing: Size: 23" L x 4" H (58.4 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, ex H. J. Westermann Collection, Germany
