Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A fine pottery vessel in the form of a female standing with both hands on her bulging - possibly pregnant - belly, all adorned with liberal remains of black, white, and red geometric motifs. Crowned by a flared headdress that doubles as the vessel's spout, the stylized figure presents a sizable head with wide-open eyes, a petite nose, and thin lips. The Moche of northern Peru may be the only ancient culture of the Americas that produced true portrait vessels, like this example. In fact, scholars have been able to follow the progression of age and rank of several individuals portrayed in Moche pottery. Size: 6.3" W x 11.3" H (16 cm x 28.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995
