Description:

Pre-Columbian, North/Central Coast Peru, Huarmey Valley, Moche, ca. 500 to 600 CE. A beautiful textile border composed of tightly woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in vibrant hues of pink, red, blue, yellow, green, brown, and white. The textile presents four panels showing abstract anthropomorphic figures standing upon broad feet with stocky arms draped to their sides. The enlarged heads bear ovoid eyes, arched noses, wide mouths, and zigzagging headbands beneath projecting headdresses. Between the figures are panels of openwork checkerboards surrounded by repeating geometric motifs. Mounted atop a museum-quality display fabric. Size (textile): 44" L x 3.75" W (111.8 cm x 9.5 cm); (display fabric): 59" L x 19.75" W (149.9 cm x 50.2 cm).

  • Condition: One outer panel reattached to larger border. Minor loosening to some interior and peripheral threads, with staining and fading to some areas of original coloration. Great traces of original coloration in several areas. Iconography is still visible and clear.
