Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche 1, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. A bichrome terracotta stirrup vessel depicting a naked royal sacrificial prisoner of war, kneeling and holding onto a rope that is tied around his neck with his right hand. Notice his expressive face gazing into the distance in utter despair. Despite his nude state, the figure is delineated with finely incised details such as the multiple scarification lines on his chin and his striated shoulder-length hair. Notice also that his face is painted a cream color to represent duality. A powerful sculpture created by an exceptionally skilled artist. Size: 4.5" W x 8" H (11.4 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-Dr. Fisher private museum, Germany
