Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche culture, ca. 400 CE. This vessel is quite unusual in that it features an entire scene of Moche life rather than an individual human portrait, animal or plant representation. Let's begin at the base. Note the desert floor highlighted with flora and fauna painted in white pigment over the red ground. Then the mighty Andean mountains emerge with several prominenet peaks. Perched on the mountains, we have a coyote eyeing a docile deer, a human figure climbing from a peak at the right to meet his maker in a sacrifice at the center. Overseeing it all is a wise owl, a nocturnal hunter that Pre-Columbian artisans oftentimes featured in scenes linked to the underworld. This intricate scene offers a rare window onto the beliefs and rituals of the ancient Andean world! 7-3/4"H x 6-1/4"W x 6-1/2"D
