Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche culture, 1st phase (Moche 1), ca. 1 to 200 CE. A very fine and detailed stirrup vessel of molded clay. Vessel, a type of early beer bottle attached via a cord through the stirrup-shaped handle, is in the form of a male captive. He is shown kneeling, nude with hands tied behind his back and rope around his neck. He has detailed facial features and long hair parted down the middle. One aspect of early Moche pottery that disappeared over the years was the degree of detail. In Moche I, legs are shown in full relief, even along the base; facial details are full and accurate; surfaces were more highly burnished and fine, and the most distinguished feature is the button/mushroom section at the end of the spout. Size: 4.75" W x 6.625" H (12.1 cm x 16.8 cm)
