Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche III, ca. 300 to 400 CE. This elegant vessel with its gorgeous bichrome finish in hues of orange and cream and its gracefully flared Moche III spout and globular body, possesses fascinating iconography. We see six bird heads with crested heads emerging from a spotted form, perhaps a shared spotted body, perhaps a starry sky. Each bird cranes its neck downward over a light beige lower section representing either earth or sky. In the Pre-Columbian world, birds were sky animals associated with the sun, the moon, and all the celestial elements. As flying creatures, birds served as messengers between humans and the sacred deities of the celestial realm. Size: 8-7/8" x 5-3/4" at widest. Provenance: Ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, a silent screen actress of the 1930's, Belaire, CA. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110032
