Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Moche Valley, Salinar / Moche transition, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A lovely pottery canchero - also known as a corn popper or water dipper - presenting a bulbous body and a zoomorphic handle, all enveloped in creamy white slip and hand-painted with intricate, geometric motifs. Sitting upon a rounded base, the curved shoulder rises to a circular opening surrounded by orange rings of spiraling, circular, linear, and triangular decorations. The lengthy handle extends from the shoulder edge, curving upward and tapering to a pointed end that presents as the head of an animal with perky ears, bulging eyes, a risen nose, delineated nostrils, and a projecting mouth. Size: 10.6" L x 6.9" W (26.9 cm x 17.5 cm); 7.8" H (19.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-private Hans Jurgen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to 1960s
