Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, ca. 300 to 800 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel taking the form of a standing condor wearing an ornate helmet, perhaps that of a warrior. The regal creature balances atop petite legs and tapered wing tips while a broad spout emanates from the back. The powerful aquiline beak extends from the face while a central crest presides above the smooth brow. Condors were important symbols of power and strength to the Mochica people and were depicted in certain sacrificial scenes, perhaps where and when this vessel was used. Size: 4.5" L x 2.4" W x 5.1" H (11.4 cm x 6.1 cm x 13 cm)
