Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 400 CE. An evocative double chambered vessel, featuring a thin, tall stirrup handle and spout, one gourd-shaped chamber, and another figural chamber. The figural chamber is in the form of a standing figure who cradles a tiny baby llama which appears swaddled in cloth that wraps around the figure's back. The figure also wears a bird-shaped headdress that straps under the chin. The face is striking, with open slits for eyes and mouth, a jutting chin, and a prominent nose. Bi-chrome pigment - creamy white and earthy orange - embellish the piece beautifully. Size: 7.1" W x 8.5" H (18 cm x 21.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s
