Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A wonderful blackware kero in the form of a shaman head in the midst of transformation. Supported by a flat, circular base, the ancient figure is shown from the neck up, displaying an animalistic visage of heavy-lidded, feline-esque eyes, a protruding nose with broad nostrils, full lips held parted to expose 4 sharp fangs, and a lengthy, extended tongue, all flanked by a pair of large ears with annular earspools that dually serve as handles to the vessel. A cylindrical headdress sits atop the shaman's head, forming the mouth of the vessel. The fascinating example depicts the moment which a shaman is transforming into an animal. Moche priests were believed to have the ability to transform themselves into animal spirit helpers via the consumption of the hallucinogenic San Pedro cactus. Judging by his feline characteristics, this shaman is likely changing into a jaguar. Size: 5.25" in diameter x 5.125" H (13.3 cm x 13 cm)
