Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. This is an intriguing Moche portrait vessel in the shape of a naturalistically-posed human figure with a monkey-like face. The figure wears a cream colored robe that exposes only his head, feet, and arms; he sits with one leg curled beneath himself and the other folded over, and his hands clasped over his knee. His arms have dark red marks that may be tattooing or scarification. His face has a toothy grin and wizened features that may indicate he is someone with monkey-like powers - but, given the portraiture style of the Moche, it seems more likely that this is a depiction of an old man with wrinkles, scars, or tattoos on his face. Size: 7.25" L x 5.75" W x 8.25" H (18.4 cm x 14.6 cm x 21 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Scollard collection, acquired before 1990
