Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 BCE to 300 CE. A fascinating pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a figure wearing an intriguing adornment - an eyepatch! Seated with hands resting on lap, the figure wears a tunic adorned with geometric motifs while grasping a husk of corn in the right hand. A shoulder-length coiffure frames the visage, which displays a huge, heavy-lidded eye, an elongated mouth, and thin lips as sizeable ear adornments dangle to either side. The head is crowned by a diamond-shaped tiara, while the eye-patch diagonally bisects the face, traveling across the left eye and below the nose. A tubular stirrup spout arches outward from the head and ends at the lower back. Size: 4.4" W x 6" H (11.2 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected from 1970-2008
