Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A fine stirrup portrait vessel showing a seated younger man with bulging eyes and a serious expression; he is seated in a crouch and has his finely detailed hands crossed over his chest as if he is cold and holding his cloak more tightly around his body. He wears a double-plumed headdress, huge disc-shaped earrings, and has a coca bag that hangs over his stomach. He is overall painted dark orange with cream-colored clothing and dark red details. This would have been a portrait of an important member of Moche society. Furthermore, it is possible - even probable - that there are portraits of him as an older man found in other vessels, as we know of several examples of Moche portrait vessels portraying the same individual at different stages of life! Size: 5.3" W x 9.45" H (13.5 cm x 24 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s
