Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A mold-made bi-chrome head of a jaguar, hollow in form and probably created to decorate a headdress, with a perforation on the lower neck. The jaguar's fierce snarling countenance is comprised of raised alert ears, bulging eyes delineated via applied pupils and surrounding irises, a prominent snout with incised flaring nostrils, and an open mouth revealing sharp fangs - presenting a coat that is meticulously painted with a wonderful black on white spotted pattern. The jaguar was a symbol of power and kingship throughout the pre-Columbian New World; for the Moche and others, it symbolized a power and might associated with leaders in their society. Size: 2.75" H (7 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.
