Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A wonderful redware jar with a bulbous body and a slender neck adorned with an anthropomorphic head presenting amygdaloid eyes, a curved nose, full lips, and prominent ears. His towering headdress doubles as the spout of the vessel, while stippled decoration embellishes his body, perhaps intended to represent corn kernels as corn was a main staple of the Moche diet. A horizontal band of red slip encircles the rim as the whole vessel sits upon a rounded base. Size: 5.8" Diameter x 8.3" H (14.7 cm x 21.1 cm)
