Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 450 to 550 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel with a planar base, a globular body, a stirrup-shaped spout arching off the verso, and a cylindrical spout with a gently tapered tip, all in beige, brown, tan, and russet hues. Splayed atop the vessel body is a stylized simian creature with an expressive visage flanked by spotted ear ornaments and a curling tail. A pair of cacao pods suspended from a vine or branch is grasped in both hands. Size: 4.625" W x 8.375" H (11.7 cm x 21.3 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light fading to pigment, with touch-up painting to several areas, and softening to some finer simian features. Nice remains of original pigment in scattered areas.
