Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche IV, ca. 400 to 500 CE. An impressive polychrome ceramic stirrup vessel of a standing eagle warrior. He is donning an eagle mask and has wings on his back; he holds a mace-headed club and shield created by the ancient Moche of Northern Peru. His headdress features a representation of the sun, with an anthropomorphic head applied in raised relief, perhaps a trophy head conquered in battle. Beyond this, his ear ornaments represent the heads of serpents, adding to his ferocity. Moche society was ruled by warrior nobles, such as the gent depicted in this example, who went to battle with unabashed violence, seizing captives and expanding their reign. Quite a fine example of Moche ceramic technique, style, and iconography!  A superb sculptural feat! Size: 9"H x 5"L. Provenance: Ex-private Meisenheimer collection, CA; ex-private Ron Messick collection, acquired in 1990s. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
