Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche culture, ca. 300 to 700 CE. This fragmentary textile is a wonderful example of slit tapestry weaving using cotton fiber warps and camelid wool weft fibers (alpaca or llama) dyed in colorful hues of earthen brown, red, blue, ochre, and black. The stylized fearsome figure may be a portrait of Ai Apec - the principal god of the Mochica people - he is often depicted with fangs, extended claws, and a headdress with protruding animal heads. Size (ancient textile): 7.5" L x 7" W (19 cm x 17.8 cm); (cloth backing): 14.75" L x 14" W (37.5 cm x 35.6 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to 1960s
