Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 450 to 550 CE. A fine pottery stirrup vessel depicting a seated man dressed in a knee-length tunic, a lengthy shawl, and white-painted finery. The almond eyes peer out from behind a prominent nose, with a skin-tight cap adorned with a brown trapezoidal frontal element on top, and a coca bag draped behind one shoulder. A tapered spout projects up from the back and has a sturdy handle arching off the verso and down to the middle of the figure's back. Size: 6.75" L x 3.9" W x 7.375" H (17.1 cm x 9.9 cm x 18.7 cm)

  • Condition: Professional repair and restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and fading to pigment, with area of fire-darkening atop head, and chip to top of spout, otherwise in nice condition. Great figural form.
