Description:

Pre-Colombian, north coast of Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. This is a beautiful and elegant stirrup vessel depicting a seated but alert jaguar in cream and red-orange color. The jaguar has resist-painted markings and a fanged, open mouth below wide, expressive eyes. Its ears are tipped back in the unmistakable expression of an angry cat. The feline is the most pervasive animal in ancient Peruvian art, and they were associated with military, religious, and political leaders. The jaguar, which in life hunts by jumping at the head of its prey, may have been a symbol of decapitation -- another recurring theme in ancient Peru. Size: 9" L x 7" H (22.9 cm x 17.8 cm).
