Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, Moche III period, ca. 500 to 550 CE. A graceful Moche stirrup vessel with the body of a llama carrying two sacks across its back. The llama has a serene face and perfect perky ears. The two sacks on his sides have painted decorations. The llama's legs and tail and the stirrup and spout are painted creamy white, while the llama's head and body are painted an earthy red. Llamas were the largest domesticated animal in the Americas prior to Spanish contact, and they played a vital role in ancient Peru, transporting heavy loads up steep mountain paths to access remote villages and creating a cohesive cultural area linked by roads and trade. This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
