Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, ca. 400-500 CE. Large terracotta spouted vessel done in a surrealist style depicting a healing scene; combined figure of a shaman / healer with face painted in red stripes on either side and a central red line across the nose, forehead and chin on a cream colored background, the other end being a patient with wide open eyes and red lines painted across cheeks. Both bodies are connected in the midsection. On top of the midsection is a Sea Lion holding a round stone in its mouth. These stones where used by theMochica for healing and are depicted in other healing scenes! If one looks at the side of the shaman's head one sees a space where this healing stone is envisioned.A complicated abstract surrealist healing scene of great historical importance! 9-1/2"L x 9-1/2"W.
