Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A wonderful pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a seated figure posed introspectively with a peaceful visage adorned in spirals of face paint, suggesting that they are dreaming or in a trance. Carrying a seed bag over the right shoulder, the figure wears a vertically striped tunic and hunches forward with knees drawn up and arms crossed at chest. She slightly bows her head, displaying closed, ovoid eyes, a curved nose, and an elongated mouth, all flanked by a sizeable pair of ears. Her hair drapes down her back, while the cylindrical, stirrup spout arches out from her head and ends at her back, surmounted by a mushroom-shaped rim; typical of Moche I style pottery. Size: 6.8" W x 7.1" H (17.3 cm x 18 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s
