Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel in the shape of a charming camelid head, more specifically a llama. Decorated with russet red pigment atop a cream ground, the sizable cranium presents with huge, almond-shaped eyes, a conical snout with nostril slits and an incised mouth, a wide neckline, and backswept ears, all beneath a stirrup-shaped handle and a tapered cylindrical spout with an everted rim. A large diamond atop the head as well as triangles on the snout, neck, and verso create ornate decorations across the composition. Llamas were the largest domesticated animal in the Americas prior to Spanish contact and played a vital role in ancient Peru, transporting heavy loads up steep mountain paths to access remote villages and creating a cohesive culture area linked by roads and trade. Size: 7.7" L x 5.25" W x 8.8" H (19.6 cm x 13.3 cm x 22.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s
