Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A hammered gilded copper maskette with an abstract face in low relief on its surface, including large eyes, each pierced through, perhaps for use to attach this as an applique onto a tunic. Below the eyes is a downturned mouth with a series of raised dots inside of it. The border of the maskette is slightly downturned, creating a rim. Size: 2.15" W x 2" H (5.5 cm x 5.1 cm); 2.65" H (6.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex H. J. Westermann collection, Germany, collected 1960-70
