Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 750 CE. A hand-built pottery stirrup vessel with a register of stylized, left-facing warrior figures adorned with ornate armor, wielding intimidating weapons, and bearing bodies in the shape of rotund 'beans.' The spherical body rests atop a squat foot and has a stirrup-shaped handle on the top that is surmounted with a slightly tapered cylindrical spout. The highly burnished surfaces bear a layer of beige pigment which provides a neutral ground for the vermilion-hued figures. Size: 5.7" W x 10.4" H (14.5 cm x 26.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to 1960s
