Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase III, ca. 350 to 550 CE. An attractive, hand-built pottery stirrup vessel of spherical form adorned with brick-red pigment atop a cream-hued ground. Sitting upon a slightly rounded, ring-form foot, the globular body displays a quartet of stylized, right-facing lizards with striped bodies, lengthy claws, narrow heads, and sinuous tails. A stirrup-shaped handle arches from atop the shoulder and is surmounted by a gently flared spout. Size: 6.4" Diameter x 9.7" H (16.3 cm x 24.6 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to 1960s
